See Normal Vision The eye is generally curved roughly the same amount in all directions, much like a basketball. Light from all directions can be focused directly onto the retina, the "film" of the eye. These sharp images are then transmitted to the brain. In some individuals, the eye is curved more in one direction than the other, much like a football is. As a result light from different directions is focused at different places in front of or behind the retina. Astigmatism usually occurs in conjunction with myopia or hyperopia. Generally, it results in vision being blurred far away and up close.
