Blepharitis: Eye Irritation Due to Eyelid Inflammation
Blepharitis is a chronic or long-term inflammation of the eyelids and eyelashes. It affects people of all ages. Among the most common causes of blepharitis are poor eyelid hygiene, excessive oil production by the eyelid glands, a bacterial infection (often staphylococcal), or an allergic reaction. Those suffering from blepharitis may notice a film over their eyes which must be blinked away or a gritty feeling to their eyes. Dryness, redness, burning, and crusting of the eyelids are also common with blepharitis. Sugarland Eye & Laser Center can help determine the cause of your blepharitis and guide your treatment.

Some common treatments used for blepharitis include:

Warm Compresses 2-3 Times A Day
  • Wet a soft and clean cloth in warm water.
  • Place the cloth across both eyes (closed) while lying down.
  • Allow 10 minutes to pass, reheating the warm cloth as needed.
Lid Scrubs 2-3 Times A Day
  • Mix 1 part water and 1 part baby shampoo in the palm of your hand.
  • Saturate the end of a q-tip with the diluted shampoo.
  • Gently scrub the bases of the eyelashes for 15 seconds.
Eye Drops And/Or Eye Ointments
  • Your ophthalmologist may recommend eye drops, eye ointments, and/or pills.
