Lasik surgery involves two steps: creating a thin and precise flap on the surface of the cornea and reshaping the cornea to allow proper focusing. Traditionally, the corneal flap during LASIK has been created with a microkeratome. This is a computer controlled-blade that moves across the cornea in a very precise manner to create the flap. Most of the risks surrounding LASIK surgery revolve around creation of the flap with a microkeratome.

The revolutionary intraLASIK procedure reduces the risks of LASIK and achieves superior results by eliminating all blades from the procedure. With intraLASIK, a flap is created with a femtosecond laser in just a few seconds. The size and shape of the flap can be customized to each patient to achieve optimal results. Larger flaps can be created for patients with larger pupils requiring larger treatment zones. Patients who have been told they are not LASIK candidates because of their corneal thickness now may qualify for LASIK due to the ability to make very thin flaps with intraLASIK.
