This diagnostic test is the
gold standard in comprehensive evaluation of patients
with retinal diseases. This includes diabetic
retinopathy, hypertension retinopathy, and age-related
macular disease. With retinal angiography, about
1 milliliter of fluorescein dye is injected through
a tiny needle into a vein in your arm. The needle
is smaller than that generally used for standard
blood draws. In a few seconds, the dye is pumped
into the blood vessels in the retina. Using a
special camera with built-in fluorescein filters,
special digital pictures or video of the dye moving
through the retina blood vessels can be documented.
The results of this test can tell your doctor
what stage your disease process is in. If intervention
is needed, the results of this test can help guide
treatment.
